Around the hood

Spring is here! This is Australia, so it was never too far away, but for the last month or so the flowers started budding like crazy. Lots of magnolias, but also wild freesias, and tons more that I can’t even name. And the animals! I didn’t manage to capture any on camera, but I saw so many birds – cockatoos (obvs!), kookaburras (ā¤ļø), lorikeets, bush turkeys, plus rabbits and even a fox! šŸ¦Š And that’s before I go for a walk to our little pocket of bushland (that’s what we call a native Australian forest). It’s totally green and lush and feels like you’re a million miles away, even though it’s 5 minutes (not a typo) from my house.

A 5-minute walk from your house? Lucky you! These pictures are so beautiful. I like the one with, what you call, the little pocket of bushland, the most (no 3). Is that true that your sunrise is on your right (when facing south), opposite to what we’ve got used to here in Europe (the other hemisphere…)?

Aga! Long time no see! šŸ™‚
The sunrise question is way too hard for my tired brain, but I don’t think so? šŸ™‚ All I know is that the sun rises over the ocean in all of eastern Australia, and the sets over the land. Not sure why this would be hemisphere specific — the sun always moves from east to west, right? šŸ¤” šŸ˜‚

So my initial mistake was associating the south with that part of the sky where we can see the sun at midday (this is true for Europe) while the south (and also east, west as you noticed) is absolute whenever you are. If you are facing south in Australia the sun will be behind you at midday. And this is kind of amazing because in Europe the sun is always in front of you when you’re facing south at midday.
